A thesis is recommended for students who intend to continue study toward the PhD degree or plan research-related employment. If the thesis option is elected, the student must write the thesis and pass an oral examination on a report of research initiated by the student under the guidance of the major professor. A faculty committee, chaired by the major professor, will evaluate the written report and conduct an oral examination of the candidate.
Thesis The Prospectus As soon as possible after the appointment of their advisory committee, and before beginning the actual preparation of their thesis, students should submit to the committee a proposal.
This prospectus should indicate 1 the purpose of the investigation, 2 its scope, 3 its importance, and 4 its scholarly method. Preparing the Manuscript Instructions regarding the preparation of manuscripts may be obtained from the Graduate School.
It is the responsibility of the student to comply in every respect with the thesis and dissertation regulations established by the Graduate School. After the oral examination the student will be asked to make corrections if necessary to the thesis.
All committee committee will sign the title page, and the acceptance page is signed by the faculty advisor only. After the faculty advisor has accepted the corrections the student will deposit a hard copy of the title and acceptance page to the College Office in Strong Hall.
